The 2002 NFL season was the 83rd season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season was held from September 5, 2002 to January 19, 2003.
The league was expanded to 32 teams with the Houston Texans , which resulted in the teams being reorganized into eight divisions. Since then, 4 teams have been playing in each division.
The AFC Central was renamed AFC North. The AFC South was newly formed and consists of the Indianapolis Colts (formerly AFC East), the Tennessee Titans and the Jacksonville Jaguars (both formerly AFC Central) and the new team of the Houston Texans. The Seattle Seahawks switched from AFC West to NFC West.
The NFC Central has been renamed NFC North. The previous NFC West was split up. The Rams and 49ers remained in this division and were supplemented by the Cardinals (formerly NFC East) and the Seahawks (formerly AFC West). The newly formed NFC South consists of the Saints, the Panthers and the Falcons (all previously NFC West) and the Buccaneers (previously NFC Central).
The existing collective bargain agreement between the teams and the players was extended to 2007.
Regular season
The regular season began on September 5, 2002. It comprised 256 games that were played in 17 game weeks, with each team playing 16 games and a game-free week ( bye week ) between the third and tenth week. After the 17th game week the tables looked like this:
As part of the introduction of the new league structure, a modified game plan was also introduced. According to this game plan, play against every other team at least twice in a period of eight years. In addition, at least one away game is played for each opposing team.
