The APFA season in 1920 was the first season of the American Football League "American Professional Football Association" (APFA), which two years later into the known today National Football League was renamed (NFL). The first game took place on September 26, 1920, the last game on December 19, 1920. The Akron Pros became champions of the league .

history

Although in modern times it was officially declared the first season, the APFA 1920 was not very well organized. There was neither a uniform game plan nor a common minimum number of games. As in the previous period, the opponents were selected solely on the basis of financial considerations. For this reason, she also avoided the use of the term league .

The only thing that all teams had in common was the use of a uniform letterhead. However, it was agreed to appoint Jim Thorpe as the first president. However, this was not because of his administrative skills, but rather to use Thorpe's notoriety for the new association. Because of this, the APFA did not keep a table. For a long time the NFL was of the opinion that no champions had been chosen for this season either, but historians found that at the official meeting of the owners on April 30, 1921, while discussing the situation of the teams, the championship was casually awarded to the pros .

Of the teams participating in this championship, the Chicago Cardinals (now Arizona Cardinals) and the Decatur Staleys (now Chicago Bears) are still two teams active in the NFL 100 years later.
