The 1996 NFL season marked the 77th season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 1, 1996 and ended on December 23, 1996. The season ended with the Pro Bowl on February 2, 1997 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu , Hawaii .
The longtime owner of the Cleveland Browns Art Modell shocked Cleveland football fans during the 1995 season by surprisingly moving the team to Baltimore to create what is now the Baltimore Ravens .
Due to the protests, the NFL team owners agreed that a new franchise would be awarded for the Ravens and that a new owner would be sought for the Browns. Thus, no football team played in Cleveland between 1996 and 1998 and the Browns were inactive until they were re-established in 1999 . The Ravens, newly founded by the browns relocation controversy , played this year and next at the Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, while the Carolina Panthers opened their new stadium , then called Ericsson Stadium , after a year late .
NFL draft
The 1996 NFL Draft took place April 20-21 at Madison Square Garden , New York City . With their first pick in the draft, the New York Jets selected wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson from the University of Southern California . This draft is regarded as one of the best drafts for the position of wide receiver, as in addition to Johnson there are receivers such as Terry Glenn , Eddie Kennison , Marvin Harrison , Eric Molds , Bobby Engram , Terrell Owens , Muhsin Muhammad , Amani Toomer , Jermaine Lewis and Joe Horn selected and players in the NFL were selected. Of the five receivers, none was identified as a so-called bust , i.e. H. Considered a failure, as these receivers played in the NFL for an above average length of time with at least eleven years.
Aside from the receivers, the draft was also a good one for the position of the linebacker . In addition to Ray Lewis , Super Bowl MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion, Zach Thomas , Tedy Bruschi , Kevin Hardy , Simeon Rice , John Mobley , Donnie Edwards, Randall Godfrey , Earl Holmes and Carlos Emmons were selected, all of whom have been in for an above average length of time the NFL played.
In contrast, the 1996 draft is considered the worst for the quarterback position . On the one hand, no quarterback was selected in the first round of the draft that year, which was the last time in the draft of 1988 and has not happened since then until today (2019) and on the other hand only four of the eight selected quarterbacks have ever been in the NFL played.
