The Three Rivers Stadium was a stadium in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . It served from 1970 to 2000 as the venue for the NFL games of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the MLB games of the Pittsburgh Pirates .
After the Three Rivers Stadium was closed in 2001, the stadium was demolished and the Pirates and Steelers moved to newly built stadiums. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Panthers played in the newly built Heinz Field from 2001 . The Pittsburgh Pirates moved to PNC Park .
On September 20, 1970, the first NFL game took place at Three Rivers Stadium, a 7:19 loss to the Houston Oilers . Most of the spectators for a football game at Three Rivers Stadium came on January 15, 1995, when 61,545 spectators watched the Steelers' game against the San Diego Chargers , which the Steelers lost 1:17.
