The 2009 NFL season was the 90th season of American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 10, 2009 and ended on January 3, 2010.

The New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV by 31:17.

For the first time, the Pro Bowl took place on the weekend before the Super Bowl. This made the Super Bowl the last game of the season.

Regular season

The season opening game, the "Kickoff", took place on September 10th in Pittsburgh . The defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers played against the AFC South competitor Tennessee Titans .

Super Bowl XLIV was the 44th edition of the Super Bowl and took place on February 7, 2010 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami , Florida . In the final, the Indianapolis Colts met the New Orleans Saints . The Saints, traded as underdogs, defeated the Colts by 31:17 and won their first Super Bowl.
