The Kansas City Chiefs are an American football team from the United States' National Football League (NFL). You play there in the American Football Conference (AFC) in the Western Division . The Chiefs played as the Dallas Texans from 1960 to 1962 before being renamed with a move to Kansas City , Missouri in 1963 . The Kansas City Chiefs three times won the championship of the American Football League , the last winning the Super Bowl IV enabled and once the championship of the NFL when they after the season 2019 the Super Bowl LIV won.

history

Today's Kansas City Chiefs were once founded as the Dallas Texans in the American Football League (AFL), the then competitive league of the NFL. When the AFL began operations, with the exception of the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, there were no professional teams west of the Mississippi and south of Washington, DC Dallas was an attractive home for a new professional football team. However, the NFL decided for the 1960 season to found the Dallas Cowboys and came before the young AFL. As a result, the Texans began looking for a new market and have been based in Kansas City ever since. Initially, the new franchise was to be called Kansas City Texans , although Kansas City is not in Texas, but due to local opposition, the name Kansas City Chiefs caught on.

The Chiefs' AFL era began with a tragic death when running back Stone Johnson broke his neck in a friendly and died 10 days later. The Chiefs honored him by withdrawing his number 33 shirt and won three AFL titles. Here they fought tough battles against the AFL rivals Oakland Raiders . When the AFL and NFL merged, the Chiefs caused a bang in 1970 when they won Super Bowl IV against the favored Minnesota Vikings in their second Super Bowl appearance . The basis of Hank Stram's team was the strong defense around Buck Buchanan , Bobby Bell , Curley Culp and Willie Lanier , with quarterback Len Dawson and Norwegian kicker Jan Stenerud backing. After that, the Chiefs sank in mediocrity until coach Marty Schottenheimer built another strong defense around Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas and produced strong running backs like Christian Okoye , Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson on the offensive . Despite the commitment of quarterback star Joe Montana , the Chiefs were always strong in the regular season in the 1990s , but notoriously weak in the play-offs: Schottenheimer's teams won just 3 out of 10 knockout games. After Schottenheimer's departure and Thomas' tragic accidental death, the Chiefs broke up, and even with the new star tight end Tony Gonzalez , the Chiefs remained mediocre in the 2000s. In the 2010s, the Chiefs built a strong defense team with Justin Houston and Tamba Hali , aided by new running back Jamaal Charles and quarterback Alex Smith . In 2013 , after a strong regular season (11-5 wins), they reached the play-offs again, but gambled away a 38:10 lead against the Indianapolis Colts and after a 44:45 defeat became only the second NFL team to play in lost a 28-point lead in a knockout game. After the Chiefs won the first game of the 2015 season, the next five games were lost, making the Chiefs no longer given a chance to the play-offs. To make matters worse, the top running back Jamaal Charles injured himself long-term in the game against the Chicago Bears . However, the home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers , which was won 23:13, initiated a remarkable winning streak in which the Chiefs won all subsequent regular season games. The Chiefs are the first NFL team to follow a series of 10 wins after a series of five defeats and only the second team after the Cincinnati Bengals in 1970, which after a 1: 5 result the play-offs at the end of the season has reached. Since the Broncos had finished with 12: 4 in the AFC West, the Chiefs had to play in the wildcard game against the Houston Texans , which were won with a sovereign 30: 0. It succeeded Knile Davis , became the first in NFL history to Eröffnungskickoff carry back the Texans directly to a touchdown. In the Divisional Game, the Chiefs had to go to Gillette Stadium , where they were eliminated by the New England Patriots at 27:20.

For the 2018 season , the Chiefs gave their starting quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins and started the new season with Patrick Mahomes , whom they had selected 10th in the 2017 NFL Draft , as the new playmaker. Mahomes had an outstanding season, throwing 50 touchdowns and was named NFL Most Valuable Player after the season . With a record of 12-4, the Kansas City Chiefs were the best team of the regular season in the AFC, with 35.3 points per game they also made the best offense. As the best-placed team, the Chiefs had no play in the Wild Card Round and met the Indianapolis Colts in the Divisional Round , which they clearly defeated with 31:13. In the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs lost to the eventual Super Bowl winner New England Patriots in a narrow game with 31:37 overtime.

In the 2019 draft , an important cornerback with Rashad Fenton was drafted, and wide receiver Mecole Hardman and four other players were drafted. With the departure of Justin Houston and Eric Berry , the defense had to be reinforced. The season ended with a score of 12-4. After a 51:31 win over the Houston Texans , the Chiefs won the title in the AFC West and after a win 35:24 over the Tennessee Titans the AFC Championship Game . They were in the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years ( 1970 against Minnesota Vikings ) , opponents in Super Bowl LIV were the San Francisco 49ers , who were beaten by 31:20.

In the 2020/21 season, the Chiefs finished first in the AFC West ahead of the Las Vegas Raiders with 14 wins and 2 defeats. The subsequent Divisional Round was won 22:17 against the Cleveland Browns .

Fan culture

H. Roe Bartle (1925) was a great admirer of the Indian chiefs after whom the franchise is named.

The name "Chief" goes back to the Kansas City businessman and boy scout H. Roe Bartle, who was fascinated by the wisdom of Indian chiefs and made a contribution to local understanding between peoples. The fans of the Chiefs call themselves Chiefs Nation (German: Nation of the chiefs), and the stadium or the mascot are accordingly called Arrowhead Stadium (German: Stadion der Pfeilspitze) and KC Wolf (German: K [ansas] C [ity] Wolf) according to their preferred weapon or their preferred animal. The Oakland Raiders have been the Chiefs' arch rivals since the 1960s .

Remarks
A 1The NFL increased the regular season by two games - from 14 to 16.
A 2In the 1982 season , only nine instead of 16 games were played due to a strike by the players. Eight teams per conference were qualified for the play-offs, depending on their balance sheets in the regular season in the conference instead of in the division.
A 3The 1987 season was shortened to 15 games because of a player strike.
