history

derStandard.at went online on February 2, 1995 as the first website of a German-language newspaper according to its own information. Business news was initially offered for a fee . In 1996 the job market was also put online. In 1997, the entire print content was brought online and for the first time exclusively online content was created. In 1999 the operation of the website was reorganized into an independent company, Bronner Online AG. This in turn was owned by the Bronner Familien-Privatstiftung (90%) and Oscar Bronner (10%). Since 2009 derStandard.at has been owned by derStandard.at GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Standard Medien AG.

The news portal has so far been free of charge for users and is financed through advertising. The year 2005 was the first for the online medium with a positive company result. The FairUse subscription was launched in October 2014 . Accordingly, ad blockers should either be deactivated or a fixed amount paid monthly. Since May 2018, the content of derStandard.at has only been displayed if ad blockers (for this domain) have been deactivated, alternatively there is a paid PUR subscription without advertising.

Corporate structure

Since December 2012, the online and print editors have been in a shared building in Vienna's 3rd district. In June 2013 the work areas were merged into one department each. Gerlinde Hinterleitner took over the management of derStandard.at. Alexandra Föderl-Schmid was editor-in-chief from 2007 to August 2017, and since then Rainer Schüller has been interim editor-in-chief.
