The Arrowhead Stadium is a football - stadium in the American US city Kansas City in the state of Missouri . It mainly serves as the venue for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). It is part of the Truman Sports Complex along with the neighboring Kauffman Stadium , the baseball stadium of the Kansas City Royals ( Major League Baseball ) .
history
Construction of Arrowhead Stadium began in 1968 after the Kansas City Chiefs first played in the National Football League's final , the Super Bowl , in the 1967 NFL season . The official opening of the US $ 43 million (now US $ 262.2 million) arena followed on August 12, 1972 with a game of the Chiefs against the St. Louis Cardinals (24:14), with which the home team won the stadium 1972 season. The record attendance at a game of the Chiefs , which is still valid today , was set up on November 5, 1972 during the game against the Oakland Raiders with 82,094 spectators.
In 1984, concepts for a roof were presented, but they were felt to be too expensive. In the early 1990s, two video walls were set up. In 1994 the artificial turf was replaced by natural turf . From 1996 to 2007, the Kansas City Wizards from Major League Soccer (MLS) used the Arrowhead as a venue. In 2007 the team announced extensive infrastructural renovation work. The most important changes include the new player and coach rooms as well as new VIP seats. The work was finished in July 2010.
The stadium has a reputation next to CenturyLink Field of the Seattle Seahawks to be the loudest stadium in the NFL. The Arrowhead's volume record is 142.2 decibels , up from 137.6 decibels at CenturyLink Field in 2013.
