The St. Louis Cardinals often Redbirds are called a major league - baseball team. You play in the Central Division of the National League .

The Cardinals come from St. Louis , Missouri , where they were founded in 1882. The team has played their home games since 2006 at the Busch Stadium , which is located in the same place as the Busch Memorial Stadium, which was demolished in 2005 .

successes

In 2004, the Cardinals narrowly missed out on winning the 2004 World Series , the Major League Baseball championship, after being beaten by the Boston Red Sox in the final series . In 2005 they were again in the final of the National League, the "semifinals" of the 2005 World Series , where they had to admit defeat to the Houston Astros 4-2 in the best-of-seven series . The Cardinals won the 2006 World Series . This was the tenth title in her history. They won in the best-of-seven series 4-1 against the Detroit Tigers ; this, however, after they had achieved the worst rate of all division winners in the regular season with only 83 wins against 78 losses. It was also the weakest record ever that a later champion could show before the start of the title competition in October. MVP of the 102nd World Series was shortstop David Eckstein .

In the 2011 season, the St. Louis Cardinals again won the World Series - this time 4-3 against the Texas Rangers. The team had finished the regular season with 90 wins and 72 losses and thus won the Wild Card in the National League. In the NL Division Series, the Cardinals won 3-2 against the Philadelphia Philles, in the NL Championship Series they beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2. After triumphing in the World Series, manager Tony La Russa announced his resignation.

With eleven titles since their inception, the Cardinals take second place after the New York Yankees (American League) on this point. With 27 championship titles, these top the list of World Series titles.

Ex-manager Tony La Russa is also (after George "Sparky" Anderson, Cincinnati Reds (NL) and Detroit Tigers (AL)) only the second in the history of baseball to lead teams from both leagues to titles (previously with Oakland Athletics , American League ).

2012 postseason

In game 5 of the series, after a 6-0 deficit, they still won 9: 7. For the 6th time in the postseason such a deficit could be turned into a win. In 1929 the Philadelphia Athletics won the World Series against the Chicago Cubs. In 1956, the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series against the New York Yankees. In 1996 the Yankees won the World Series against the Atlanta Braves and finally the Boston Red Sox were successful in the LCS in 2008 against the Tampa Bay Rays. After the 8th inning, the Cardinals were still 7: 9 behind. So they were after the Atlanta Braves 1992, which had 3 runs to 3-2 in the 9th inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NLCS, the second team that could turn the game in the 9th inning. St. Louis has currently won 6 games in which a loss would have meant elimination. Before that, they won game 4 and 5 against the Phillies in 2011, game 6 and 7 in the World Series against the Rangers in 2011 and the wildcard game against Atlanta in 2012. The following teams won six such games: Detroit Tigers (1945–1972), Kansas City Royals (all in 1985 when the World Series was won) and the Minnesota Twins (1987-2002). Pete Kozma , who hit a two-run single in the 9th inning, is the first rookie in 88 years to do such a thing in the 9th inning of a do or die game. The Washington Senators won the 1924 World Series when rookie Earl McNeely scored a walk-off double in the 12th inning (bottom) against the New York Giants.

Game 3 of the NLCS could be won 3-1 at home. All three runs were scored by non-starters. Matt Carpenter replaced injured right fielder Carlos Beltrán in the 2nd inning. He hit a two run home run for a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning. Shane Robinson was also substituted on and enabled the last run in the 7th inning with a Gound Out , a successful hit in which he himself could not reach first base. It is the second time in postseason history that a team has scored at least three and all runs by substituted players (or one). 2011 in the Division Series the Phillies were able to win against the Cardinals through Jaime Garcia with a three-run pinch hit in the 7th inning.

The pitcher Jason Motte was able to throw out all six players who competed against him. It was only the second perfect save of two or more innings in a postseason game since Mariano Rivera . He even did it five times in the postseason. 2001 Byung-Hyun Kim secured for the Diamondbacks in the NLCS the victory over 2 innings against Atlanta.

In addition, 4 different right fielders were used. It started with Carlos Beltran, who retired with a knee injury. Then Matt Carpenter, Shane Robinson and Adron Chambers played in that position. Only one team ever used 4 players in one position in a 9 innings game. Curiously, it was the Cardinals again and it was also Right Fielder, in Game 5 of the NLCS 1987. In the 3-6 defeat, John Morris , Curt Ford , Jose Oquendo and Tom Lawless played .

In the 8-3 win in Game 4, pitcher Adam Wainwright only allowed one run in 7 innings and 5 batter were eliminated. In 4 starts as a pitcher in his postseason career, he was able to make out 27 men at the stroke and only four had a walk . Only two other pitchers have so many strike-outs and so few walks from missed throws in their first four postseason games: Cliff Lee (30K, 3BB) and Roy Halladay (28K, 4BB).

The Cardinals scored twice in the 1st, 5th, 6th and 7th innings. This is the third time in the last two postseasons that St. Louis has had 4 multiple runs . This was achieved in Game 2 of the NLCS against the Brewers and against the Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series. Yadier Molina recorded his first XBH this postseason, in the 7th inning, in his 37th attempt at the strike. In the regular season he got 22 home runs and 28 doubles.

Stars

Current top stars of the team are pitcher Adam Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina. Another former star of the team was Mark McGwire , who broke the old record of 61 home runs beaten in one season in 1998 ( Roger Maris , New York Yankees , 1961) with a haul of 70. However, McGwire is accused of having been doped with steroids throughout this season, like many other players .

Origin of name

The name Cardinals goes back to a reporter who, in the 1890s, described the players with the phrase "Wearing red, cardinal red". It is not known today whether he was referring to the representatives of the spirit or the bird, but the designation "cardinal red" established itself, which resulted in the renaming to St. Louis Cardinals in 1900. The red cardinal has therefore also graced the uniform of the players since 1922 .
