Jesse Cail Burkett (born December 4, 1868 in Wheeling , West Virginia , † May 27, 1953 in Worcester , Massachusetts ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball . His nickname was Crab .

biography

Jesse Burkett began his career in the National League on April 22, 1890 in the jersey of the New York Giants . Other stations in his career were the Cleveland Spiders , St. Louis Cardinals , St. Louis Browns and the Boston Red Sox . Mostly he was used as an outfielder . His qualities as a batsman were outstanding. In three seasons he had a batting average of over 40%. In six seasons he posted over 200 base hits.

After his career he worked as a manager in minor league baseball . In 1921 he was a coach with the New York Giants. In 1946 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee . Burkett died in 1953 at the age of 84.
