James Hoyt Wilhelm (born July 26, 1922 in Huntersville , North Carolina , † August 23, 2002 in Sarasota , Florida ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball .
biography
Hoyt Wilhelm began his career in the National League on April 19, 1952 at the age of 29 with the New York Giants . His first victory as a substitute thrower he received on April 23, 1952 in a 9-5 win over the Boston Braves . In his first hit appearance in the Major League, Wilhelm managed a home run against Dick Hoover of the Braves. This home run was to be the only one in his twenty-year career.
Wilhelm was considered one of the most successful substitute throwers of all time. He was also used as a start thrower for the Cleveland Indians and the Baltimore Orioles . In total, Wilhelm played 1070 games as a pitcher , a record that was only to be broken on September 26, 1998 by Dennis Eckersley . Wilhelm was the first player to reach 200 saves in the major leagues. With his 124 victories as a substitute thrower, he still tops the list today. Wilhelm ended his career on July 10, 1972 at the age of 49.
In 1985, Hoyt Wilhelm was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame . He died in Sarasota, Florida in 2002 at the age of 80.
