history

The Spanish fishing and trading settlement of Zara Zota was founded in 1763; the name, which many other places in Mexico and Latin America also bear, was given to the area by Hernando de Soto in 1539 . In 1819 the region fell to the USA, which founded a fort here in 1840 and drove the Seminoles to the swamps or deported them to Oklahoma . Since the end of the 1840s European settlers immigrated in large numbers, the name of the settlement was now Sara Sota . A vibrant African American community also developed in the aftermath of the American Civil War; one of the founders of the city in its current form was the former slave and later preacher of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, Lewis Colson (1844-1922).

In 1902 the city of Sarasota was officially established; surrounding villages were quickly incorporated. In 1903 the city was connected to the railroad for the first time. Construction of the 112-kilometer stretch from Durant, south of Plant City , to Sarasota began in 1895. In 1910 the route was extended to Osprey and Laurel and in 1927 to Venice . Sarasota was once the destination of the Orange Blossom Special long-distance train . The route was first operated by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad , later by CSX and from 1987 by the Seminole Gulf Railway . In the early 2000s, the section from Sarasota to Venice was closed and opened in 2008 on the Legacy Trail .

Up until the 1950s, Sarasota was a tourist destination for many African Americans. In recent years, Sarasota has developed into a shopping city for high-quality products and handicrafts.
