Laurel is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sarasota County in the US state of Florida with 8,171 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Laurel borders the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway to the west, the city of Venice to the south and is around 20 km south of Sarasota and around 100 km south of Tampa . The CDP is traversed by Tamiami Trail ( US 41 ) and Florida State Road 681 .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 8,171 inhabitants were distributed over 5,578 households. The population density was 619 inh. / Km². 94.3% of the population identified themselves as whites, 2.2% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 1.1% as Asian Americans . 0.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 2.4% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 50.7% of all households lived in 14.8% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 58.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 1.96 people and the average family size was 2.46 people.

13.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 11.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 46.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 58 years. 48.5% of the population were male and 51.5% were female.

The median annual income was $ 50,822, with 6.4% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 96.12% of the population, 1.57% spoke Spanish and 2.39% spoke another language.

On October 8, 1997, the Johnson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
