Venice is a city in Sarasota County in the US state Florida with 20,748 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Venice is located on the Gulf of Mexico on the west coast of Florida. The city is about 20 km south of Sarasota and 110 km south of Tampa .

history

Venice was once the destination of the Orange Blossom Special long-distance train . The section from Sarasota to Venice was operated from 1927 first by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad , later by CSX and from 1987 by the Seminole Gulf Railway . In the early 2000s, the section was closed and opened in 2008 on the Legacy Trail .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 20,748 inhabitants were distributed among 17,328 households. The population density was 879.2 inh / km². 97.3% of the population identified themselves as whites , 0.6% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 0.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.7% to several ethnic groups. 2.7% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 67.8% of all households lived in 6.7% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 54.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 1.74 people and the average family size was 2.24 people.

6.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 6.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 18.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 68.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 68 years. 44.8% of the population were male and 55.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 46,646, with 8.7% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 95.95% of the population and 4.05% had another mother tongue.

Shark teeth

Venice is also called "Shark's Tooth Capital of The World" (German shark tooth capital of the world ). During the annual Shark's Tooth Festival , numerous exhibits of fossilized shark teeth take place, which can also be found on the beaches (especially on Caspersen's Beach , or on the nearby beaches of Englewood ), or at the bottom of the ocean.

Venice and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks

On September 12, 2001, the FBI in Venice opened an investigation into the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . The investigations revealed that three of the terrorists involved, Mohamed Atta , Marwan Al-Shehhi and Ziad Jarrah, had lived in Venice prior to the attacks and had taken flight lessons there at the Huffman Aviation flight school at Venice Municipal Airport .

The urban area is crossed by Interstate 75 and the Tamiami Trail ( US 41 ). Venice Municipal Airport is 3 km south of the city center. The nearest international airport is Sarasota – Bradenton International Airport (35 km north).

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 171 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There were two murders, four robberies, 30 personal injuries, 87 break-ins, 466 thefts, 14 car thefts and one arson.
