Desoto Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sarasota County in the US state of Florida with 3646 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Desoto Lakes is about 5 km northeast of Sarasota and about 80 km south of Tampa .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 3,646 inhabitants were distributed over 1,674 households. The population density was 1139.4 inh / km². 84.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 7.1% as African-Americans , 0.2% as Indians and 1.6% as Asian Americans . 4.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.0% to several ethnic groups. 16.5% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 29.9% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 33.1% of all households. 67.3% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.45 people and the average family size was 2.89 people.

23.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 44 years. 45.8% of the population were male and 54.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 53,685, with 17.9% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 95.96% of the population, 2.81% spoke Spanish and 1.23% spoke German .
