South Sarasota is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sarasota County in the US state of Florida with 4950 inhabitants (as of 2010).

South Sarasota borders directly on the city of Sarasota to the north and is about 90 km south of Tampa . The CDP is traversed by the Tamiami Trail ( US 41 ).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 4950 inhabitants were distributed among 2799 households. The population density was 990 inhabitants / km². 93.4% of the population identified themselves as whites, 1.3% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 1.3% as Asian Americans . 1.5% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.2% to several ethnic groups. 6.4% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 39.5% of all households lived in 19.7% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 55.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.07 people and the average family size was 2.65 people.

18.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 16.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 35.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 51 years. 49.6% of the population were male and 50.4% were female.

The median annual income was $ 48,073, with 9.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 93.75% of the population, 5.00% spoke Spanish and 1.25% had another mother tongue.
