Longboat Key is a city on the island of the same name in the counties of Manatee and Sarasota in the US state of Florida with 6888 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Longboat Key consists of an island that separates Sarasota Bay from the open Gulf of Mexico . The city is bordered by Sarasota to the southeast and Bradenton Beach to the northwest . The city is located around 80 km south of Tampa .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 6,888 inhabitants were spread over 8,814 households, most of which are holiday homes used as second homes. The population density was 542.4 inh / km². 98.4% of the population identified themselves as white, 0.2% as African-American , 0.1% as Native American and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 0.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.4% to several ethnic groups. 1.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 77.0% of all households lived in 3.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 65.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 1.77 people and the average family size was 2.12 people.
3.2% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 2.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 14.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 79.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 70 years. 46.3% of the population were male and 53.7% were female.
The median annual income was $ 100,076, with 5.1% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 94.57% of the population, 2.06% spoke Spanish and 3.37% had another mother tongue.

On August 12, 2005, the Rufus P. Jordan House was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

The Florida State Road 789 connects the barrier islands Anna Maria Iceland and Longboat Key with Sarasota. The Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is 10 km away.

The crime rate in 2010 was 79 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There was one assault, 24 break-ins, 94 thefts and one car theft.
