The county has an area of ​​2,312 square kilometers, of which 393 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Pinellas County , Hillsborough County , Hardee County , DeSoto County, and Sarasota County . Together with Sarasota County, the county forms the metropolitan area of ​​Sarasota .

history

Manatee County was formed on January 9, 1855 from parts of Jefferson County. The name comes from occurring there manatees , the manatees , which are also visible in the coat of arms of the County.

As of the 2010 census , Manatee County had 322,833 people in 172,901 households. The population density was 168.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 81.9% white, 8.7% African American , 0.3% Native American and 1.6% Asian Americans . 5.4% were members of other races and 2.0% of different races. 14.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 38.6% of all households lived in 25.7% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 64.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.34 people and the average family size was 2.85 people.

22.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 20.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 36.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 46 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.

The median income for a household in the 47,910 USD , while 14.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 83.94% of the population, 11.03% spoke Spanish and 5.03% had another mother tongue.
