The Martin County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Stuart .

history

Martin County was formed on May 30, 1925 from parts of Palm Beach County. It was named after John W. Martin , Florida governor from 1925 to 1929.

geography

The county covers an area of ​​1,950 square kilometers, of which 511 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Palm Beach County , Okeechobee County, and St. Lucie Counties .

Martin County is part of the Port St. Lucie, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area , also known in common parlance as the Treasure Coast .

According to the 2010 census , Martin County had 146,318 people in 78,037 households. The population density was 101.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 87.3% white, 5.4% African American , 0.6% American Indian and 1.1% Asian Americans . 4.2% were members of other races and 1.6% of different races. 12.2% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 43.2% of all households lived in 22.2% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 62.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.23 people and the average family size was 2.75 people.

19.5% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 17.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 34.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 50 years. 49.5% of the population were male and 50.5% were female.

The median income for a household in the 50,573 USD , while 12.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 85.97% of the population, 9.67% spoke Spanish and 4.36% had another mother tongue.
