The DeSoto County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Arcadia .

history

De Soto County was formed on May 19, 1887 from parts of Manatee County. It was named after the Spanish conqueror Hernando de Soto . It was one of the largest counties in Florida by 1921.

geography

The county has an area of ​​1,656 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Highlands County , Glades County , Charlotte County , Sarasota County , Manatee County, and Hardee County .

According to the 2010 census , DeSoto County had 34,862 people in 14,590 households. The population density was 21.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 66.2% white, 12.7% African American , 0.4% Native American and 0.5% Asian Americans . 17.7% were members of other races and 2.4% of different races. 29.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 31.8% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 36.8% of all households. 69.1% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.71 people and the average family size was 3.10 people.

25.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 23.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 56.6% of the population were male and 43.4% were female.

The median income for a household in the 35,683 USD , while 26.8% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 71.53% of the population, 26.66% spoke Spanish and 1.81% had another mother tongue.
