The Indian River County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Vero Beach .

The county has an area of 1,598 square kilometers, of which 294 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: St. Lucie County , Okeechobee County , Osceola County, and Brevard Counties .
The county is run by the Office of Management and Budget for statistical purposes under the name Sebastian-Vero Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area .

The Indian River County was formed on May 30, 1925 from parts of St. Lucie County. It was named after the Indian River lagoon in front of it.

As of the 2010 census , the Indian River County had 138,028 people in 76,433 households. The population density was 105.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 84.3% white, 9.0% African American , 0.3% American Indian and 1.2% Asian Americans . 3.6% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.6% of different ethnic groups. 11.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 43.6% of all households lived in 23.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 64.3% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.26 people and the average family size was 2.77 people.
21.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 18.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 34.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 49 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.
The median income for a household in the 45,274 USD , while 14.8% of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 85.75% of the population, 9.64% spoke Spanish and 4.61% had another mother tongue.
