The Leon County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Tallahassee .

The county covers an area of ​​1,818 square kilometers, of which 91 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jefferson County , Wakulla County , Liberty County, and Gadsden County . Together with the counties of Gadsden, Jefferson and Wakulla, the county forms the metropolitan area of ​​Tallahassee .

history

Leon County was formed on December 29, 1824 from parts of Gadsden County. It was named after Juan Ponce de León , the Spanish conqueror and probably the first European to enter Florida.

Parts of the 1,936 designated National Forest Apalachicola National Forest extend up into the County.

According to the 2010 census , Leon County had 275,487 people in 124,129 households. The population density was 159.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 63.0% white, 30.3% African American , 0.3% American Indian and 2.9% Asian Americans . 1.3% were members of other races and 2.2% of different races. 5.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 27.1% of all households and people aged 65 and over in 17.5% of all households. 54.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.35 people and the average family size was 2.94 people.

26.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 30.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 14.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 30 years. 47.6% of the population were male and 52.4% were female.

The median income for a household in the 45,915 USD , while 22.8% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the first language of 91.15% of the population, 4.20% spoke Spanish and 4.65% had another mother tongue.
