The Apalachicola National Forest is a National Forest in north-western US state of Florida , the so-called Florida Panhandle , southwest of Tallahassee . The largest forest designated in Florida in 1936 covers an area of ​​2311 km². The Apalachicola National Forest is administered by the United States Forest Service and is home to two rivers, the Ochlockonee River and the Sopchoppy River , which are part of the Florida National Scenic Trail , a state agency affiliated with the National Trails System .

The national forest extends over the counties of Bay , Franklin , Leon , Liberty and Wakulla and was named after the Apalachicola people , a tribe of North American Indians related to the Muskogee .
