The Union County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Lake Butler .
history
Union County was formed on May 20, 1921 from parts of Bradford County. It was named to commemorate the concept of unity. Union County is Florida's state prison for men.
geography
The county covers an area of 647 square kilometers, of which 24 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Baker County , Bradford County , Alachua County, and Columbia County .

As of the 2010 census , Union County had 15,535 people in 4,479 households. The population density was 24.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 75.0% white, 22.2% African American , 0.4% American Indian and 0.2% Asian Americans . 0.7% were members of other races and 1.4% of different races. 4.8% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 22.2% of all households lived in 38.3% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 71.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.13.
21.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 29.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 31.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 64.7% of the population were male and 35.3% were female.
