The Sumter County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Bushnell .

history

Sumter County was formed on January 8, 1853 from parts of Marion County. It was named after General Thomas Sumter , a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

The county has an area of ​​1,503 square kilometers, of which 90 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lake County , Polk County , Pasco County , Hernando County , Citrus County, and Marion County .

As of the 2010 census , Sumter County had 93,420 people in 53,387 households. The population density was 66.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 86.6% white, 9.7% African American , 0.4% American Indian and 0.7% Asian Americans . 1.5% were members of other races and 1.1% of different races. 6.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 63.6% of all households lived in 10.8% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 70.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.04 people and the average family size was 2.37 people.
