The Villages is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sumter County in the US state of Florida with 114,000 inhabitants (as of 2016). Small parts of the village are also in Lake and Marion Counties . It is a so-called gated community .

geography

The place is about 90 km northwest of Orlando and is affected by the US Highways 27 and 441 as well as the Florida State Road 500 on a common route.

In neighboring Lady Lake on US 27 there is the stop named after The Villages for the Thruway Motorcoach long-distance bus system operated by the Amtrak railway company , which connects to the cities of Jacksonville , Lakeland and Palatka . There you can get a connection to the Silver Star and Silver Meteor trains .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 51,442 inhabitants were distributed over 35,587 households. The population density was 3839 inh / km². 98.2% of the population identified themselves as whites , 0.6% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.7% as Asian Americans . 0.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.3% to several ethnic groups. 1.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 0.3% of all households and persons aged at least 65 in 79.7% of all households. 71.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 1.80 people and the average family size was 2.05 people.

0.4% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 1.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 10.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 88.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 69 years. 46.8% of the population were male and 53.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 51,234, with 3.7% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 96.0% of the population and 4.0% had another native language.
