Mount Dora is a city in Lake County in the US state of Florida with 12,370 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Mount Dora is located on Lake Dora , borders the towns of Tavares and Eustis, and is around 40 km northwest of Orlando .

history

The place in central Florida was first settled in 1874 by David M. Simpson with his wife and two children. In 1880 the postmaster Ross Tremain named the place Royellou after his children Roy, Ella and Louis . In 1883 the two-story hotel The Alexander House opened with ten rooms. In that year the place was renamed to Mount Dora, the name refers to Lake Dora , a lake that was named in 1846 by settlers after Dora Ann Drawdy, who at the time was about three kilometers south of today's town with her husband Mount Dora lived.

The place was first opened by railroad in 1887 by the Sanford and Lake Eustis Railroad . The line from Sanford to Tavares was closed in the 1980s between Sanford and Sorrento. Today the Florida Central Railroad operates between Sorrento and Tavares, where there is a connection to the other network. The hotel The Alexander House was renamed The Lake House in 1893 , tourists often came in winter to hunt, fish or boating. In 1910 the place received city rights, in 1915 a locomotive station was built.

The company RC Tremain & Son had the first dispatch station for oranges built in 1891 . Although large parts of the plantations had perished in the years 1894 and 1895 due to unusually heavy frost, a box, fertilizer and canning factory were built. In 1903 the hotel was renamed Lakeside Inn , and guests included President Calvin Coolidge , Thomas Alva Edison , Henry Ford, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower . The John P. Donnelly House , which was built in 1893 by the first mayor of the place in Queen Anne style , has been listed as a monument on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975 . In 1981 the film Honky Tonk Freeway was shot in Mount Dora. Today the place is known for its antiques and craft shops.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 12,370 inhabitants were distributed over 6,942 households. The population density was 974 inh. / Km². 77.5% of the population identified themselves as whites, 15.6% as African-Americans , 0.4% as Indians and 1.8% as Asian Americans . 2.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 11.7% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 39.9% of all households lived in 22.4% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 59.2% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.16 people and the average family size was 2.75 people.

20.7% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 20.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 34.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 48 years. 46.1% of the population were male and 53.9% were female.

The median annual income was $ 45,104, with 14.4% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 93.25% of the population, 6.00% spoke Spanish and 0.75% had another mother tongue.

Events

Every year an art festival, a presentation of historical watercraft ( Antique Boat Show ) and other events take place in the village . The Mount Dora Ghost Walk is a fun and somewhat bizarre nocturnal parade in the city in which costumed performers artistically portray parts of the city's history and tell them in anecdotes and short stories.

Mount Dora is traversed by US Highway 441 ( SR 500 ) and Florida State Roads 44 and 46 . The nearest airport is Orlando Sanford International Airport (45 km east).

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 338 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were ten rapes, 18 robberies, 43 assaults, 90 break-ins, 384 thefts, 36 car thefts and two arson attacks.
