Leesburg is a city in Lake County in the US state of Florida with 20,117 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
The city is about 10 km west of Tavares and about 60 km northwest of Orlando . Fruitland Park borders the city to the north .
history
The city was founded on July 12, 1875. In 1884 the Leesburg and Indian River Railroad built a railway line from Wildwood via Leesburg to Tavares .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 20,117 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 10,625 households. The population density was 416.5 inh / km². 63.5% of the population identified themselves as whites, 28.2% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 1.7% as Asian Americans . 3.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 9.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 37.3% of all households lived in 28.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 60.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.31 people and the average family size was 2.91 people.
26.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 29.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 45.8% of the population were male and 54.2% were female.
The median annual income was $ 36,061, with 16.0% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 95.03% of the population, 4.05% spoke Spanish and 0.92% had another mother tongue.

Leesburg is crossed by US Highways 27 and 441 ( SR 500 / SR 25 ) and Florida State Roads 33 , 44 , 48 and 91 ( Florida's Turnpike , toll). With the Leesburg International Airport , the city has its own airport. The nearest international airport is Orlando International Airport (around 80 km southeast).

The crime rate in 2010 was 457 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There was one murder, 14 rapes, 58 robberies, 125 assaults, 207 break-ins, 856 thefts, 32 car thefts and two arson attacks.
