Wildwood is a city in Sumter County in the US state of Florida with 6,709 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Wildwood borders directly on the city of Coleman to the south . The city is about 20 km north of Bushnell and about 70 km west of Orlando .
history
In 1882, the Tropical Florida Railroad , a subsidiary of the Florida Railroad , opened a railway line from Ocala to what would later become Wildwood. In 1884 the Leesburg and Indian River Railroad (L&IR) built a line to Tavares . The Florida Railroad's line was extended to Plant City in 1886 and to Tampa in 1890 . In 1889, the City of Wildwood was finally founded on the L&IR branch off the Florida Railroad .
The Wildwood station was from 1994 to 1995 and from 1996 to 2004 a station of the Amtrak's Palmetto from New York City to Tampa . Today, the section between Jacksonville and Lakeland is served by the Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach long-distance buses .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 6,709 inhabitants were distributed over 3,421 households. The population density was 500.7 inh / km². 74.7% of the population identified themselves as white, 21.0% as African American , 0.4% as Native American and 1.1% as Asian Americans . 1.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.5% to several ethnic groups. 5.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 48.6% of all households lived in 20.0% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 66.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.62.
18.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 15.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 44.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 56 years. 47.4% of the population were male and 52.6% were female.
The median annual income was $ 42,481, with 20.4% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 96.01% of the population and 3.99% spoke Spanish .

Wildwood is crossed by US Highway 301 ( SR 35 ) and Florida State Roads 44 and 91 ( Florida's Turnpike , toll). The nearest airport is Orlando International Airport (around 90 km east).
The Wildwood Station is shut down.
