Coleman is a city in Sumter County in the US state Florida with 703 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Coleman borders the city of Wildwood to the north . The city is about 15 km north of Bushnell and about 70 km west of Orlando .
history
In 1886, the Tropical Florida Railroad , a subsidiary of the Florida Railroad , opened a railway line from Ocala via Coleman to Plant City . The railway line was extended to Tampa in 1890 . In April 1924 the subsidiary Florida, Western and Northern Railroad of Seaboard Air Line Railroad was founded, which was supposed to build a railway line from Coleman via Auburndale and Sebring to West Palm Beach . The entire corridor was opened in January 1925. In 1988 the Coleman - Auburndale section was closed again shortly after the takeover by CSX .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 703 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 343 households. The population density was 185.0 inh / km². 57.2% of the population identified themselves as whites, 38.7% as African American , 0.9% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 2.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.7% to several ethnic groups. 4.7% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 28.3% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 26.5% of all households. 65.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.52 people and the average family size was 3.15 people.
20.2% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 21.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 32.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 44 years. 47.7% of the population were male and 52.3% were female.
The median annual income was $ 23,646, with 31.9% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 96.80% of the population and Spanish was spoken by 3.20%.
