Regency Cruises was an American shipping company that operated several cruise ships from 1984 to 1995 .
history
Regency Cruises was founded in 1984 by the Greek businessman Anastasios Kyriakides . The shipping company had former passenger ships of the 1950s and 1960s converted into cruise ships and advertised that passengers should be able to travel on ships from the “golden age of passenger shipping”. The shipping company's first ship was the Regent Sea , a former Swedish passenger ship that entered service for Regency Cruises in 1984. Initially, the ship only went to Montego Bay , but after a few very successful voyages, the shipping company expanded with more ships to Alaska and the Caribbean . In 1986 Regency Cruises bought two former container ships to have them converted into cruise ships. The ships, renamed Regent Sun and Regent Moon , were sold to Costa Crociere before the conversion began . Regency also bought the unfinished ferry Stena Baltica in 1989 and renamed it Regent Sky . It was also supposed to be converted into a cruise ship, but this was never realized. In the early 1990s, Regency Cruises was sold to the shipowner Tony Lelakis . In 1995 there were already six ships in service for Regency Cruises, all of them former passenger ships or ferries. In the same year, however, Lelakis filed for bankruptcy and the ships of Regency Cruises were laid up . Regency Cruises was dissolved shortly afterwards. Of the six ships that were in service for Regency Cruises, only three returned to cruise service. The other three units were scrapped after long lay periods or sank on the way to being scrapped.
