The shipyard was founded in 1856 by the Austrian Navy as kk Seearsenal Pola . The foundation stone for the building was laid by the Austrian Empress Elisabeth . The first ship, the SMS Kaiser, was launched in October 1860 . A total of 55 ships were built for the Austro-Hungarian Navy . The naval arsenal was also used for the maintenance and repair of the ships of the Austro-Hungarian Navy.

After the First World War , the shipyard was operated under Italian rule to repair old ships. It also served as a docking station and was used to cut old ships. During the Second World War , the Uljanik shipyard was a German naval base .
