The cruise ship The Calypso was built in 1967 as Canguro Verde (then often renamed Durr , Ionian Harmony , Sun Fiesta , Regent Jewel , Calypso until 2007) and belonged to the Greek owner Shineco Inc in Athens. Most recently it sailed under the flag of Cyprus and was chartered to the cruise line Louis Cruise Lines .
The cruise ship The Calypso was built in 1967 by Italcantieri SpA (now Fincantieri ) south of Naples in Castellammare di Stabia as the ferry Canguro Verde . The ship was put into service by the Navigazion Traghetti Sardi in Cagliari and used between Genoa, Barcelona, Cagliari and Porto Torres. In 1974 the Canguro Verde was sold to the Società Linee Canguro, also in Cagliari, in 1981 it changed hands again and drove for Fayez Trading & Shipping in Jeddah under the Saudi Arabian flag as Durr between Suez and Jeddah. From November 1982 to February 1983 a stay at the shipyard in Malta was necessary due to serious machine damage. Another sale in 1989 to Strintzis Lines in Piraeus led to operations between Patras, Dubrovnik and Ancona under the name Ionian Harmony . In October 1990, under the new owner Thomas Ltd in Nassau, it was planned as a Sun Fiesta between Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, but was ultimately not used. Instead, the ship was sold to the Greek shipowner Antonios Lelakis in September 1992 , converted into a cruise ship in 1993 and resold to Regency Cruises in Nassau , which operated the ship from New York as Regent Jewel . In December 1994 it was sold to the owner Jule Cruises in Nassau , who chartered the ship, now called Calypso , to Transocean Tours until 1998 . The Calypso operated from Piraeus and Nice during this time . From 1998 to 2000 the ship was decommissioned and was completely overhauled. In June 2000 it was acquired at a ship auction by Louis Cruise Lines in Limassol , and in May 2005 it was transferred to its last operator Shineco Inc in Athens . In January 2013 the ship was sold to Alang (India) for scrapping . Demolition work began in April 2013.
