Castellammare di Stabia is a port city with 65,300 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on the Gulf of Naples . It is located on the site of the ancient Stabiae and belongs to the metropolitan city of Naples in the Campania region . The city is on the Circumvesuviana railway line between Sorrento and Pompei or Naples . The city is also the starting point for the cable car to Monte Faito .
history
Castellammare di Stabia was taken by the French under the Duke of Guise in 1654 ; and here in 1799 the French general Jacques MacDonald defeated the united Anglo-Neapolitan troops.
One of the most traditional shipyards in Italy is located in Castellammare di Stabia . It was built for military purposes as early as the time of the Kingdom of Naples from 1783, as the naval arsenal in Naples had become too small. In 1808, the facilities in Castellammare were further expanded by order of Joachim Murat . Even after the unification of Italy , the shipyard served military purposes. Until recently, warships were built there. a. the cruiser Vittorio Veneto . Today the Italian group Fincantieri uses the shipyard.
The city became known nationwide in autumn 2010 after its mayor Luigi Bobbio received a new catalog of fines from the city council. Among other things, penalties are laid down for wearing scarce clothing in public, for public swearing, for consuming alcohol on the street after 10 p.m. and for wearing mini skirts where you can already see the underwear.
