Portici is a city with 53,724 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the southern Italian Campania , metropolitan city of Naples . It is located 12 kilometers from Naples at the foot of Mount Vesuvius on the bay of the same name. Portici is the most densely populated municipality in all of Italy.
In 1738 the Bourbon King Charles VII had a palace ( Reggia di Portici or Palazzo Reale ) built. In this, among other things, various representative excavation finds from Herculaneum and Pompeii were collected in the following decades until they were brought to the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. Today the palace houses the Botanical Institute of the University of Naples. The castle park is a botanical garden ( Orto Botanico della Reggia ). In 1839 Italy's first railway line was opened between Naples and Portici . The city is a center of the silk industry in Italy.
The name of the city is also known from Daniel-François-Esprit Auber's opera La muette de Portici ( The Mute of Portici ).
