Boscoreale is a place with 27,228 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on the southern slope of Vesuvius in the metropolitan city of Naples in the Italian region of Campania .

The place is not far from Pompeii . With the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 the place was buried like Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae . The neighboring municipalities are Boscotrecase , Poggiomarino , Pompei , Scafati ( SA ), Terzigno and Torre Annunziata .

Boscoreale became known through excavations at the end of the 19th century, when the Roman villa of Publius Fanninus Sinistor ( Villa Fanninus ) and the approximately 30 agricultural properties ( villa rustica ) were excavated. In one of them, called Villa Pisanella , the so-called Boscoreale Treasure was found in 1895 . From 1978 to 1983, renewed, extensive examinations took place in Boscoreale. Since 1991 there has been an archaeological museum in Boscoreale, the Antiquarium di Boscoreale , in which finds from Oplontis , Pompeii , Stabiae and Boscoreale are exhibited. In the outdoor area attached to the museum, a typical villa rustica of smaller dimensions can be viewed.
