Lettere is a municipality with 6192 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Naples , Campania region . It is part of the Comunità Montana Monti Lattari - Penisola Sorrentina mountain community .

The neighboring towns of Lettere are Angri ( SA ), Casola di Napoli , Corbara (SA), Gragnano , Ravello (SA), Sant'Antonio Abate and Tramonti (SA).

The castle with Norman architectural features

The village is approached from afar for wedding celebrations. That is why there are an above-average number of restaurants in town for the region.

The castle of Lettere can be seen from afar from the plain of the river Sarno, between Torre Annunziata and the city of Sarno. It stands on a mountain spur at a height of over 300 m. The cathedral enclosed in the fort was built under the rule of the Archbishop of Amalfi. In building archaeological comparisons, the bell tower could be dated to the 12th century. However, documents already mention the place in 987. At that time it was a fortified village with a cathedral. The castle served the Prince of Amalfi as a fortification on the northern border, as such it is mentioned from the 11th century. At the end of the Middle Ages it was a fort with an enclosed village and cathedral. The Lords of Lettere changed the building from a purely military facility to a feudal seat by opening many windows. Under the rule of the Anjou the task of the fort as a frontier fortress was done. This depopulated the village and the cathedral was mentioned as a ruin in 1570.

Population development

In 1908 Lettere counted private households . Between 1991 and 2001 the population increased from 5415 to 5605. This corresponds to a percentage increase of 3.5%.
