Acerra is an Italian city ​​with 59,525 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Naples and the Campania region . It is located about 15 kilometers northeast of Naples .

history

As an Oscar founded, Acerra is the oldest city in the region. It belonged to the Etruscan League of Twelve Cities and later became the first Roman provincial city to receive the title "civitas sine suffragio" (city without voting rights, 332 BC ).

In the early Middle Ages , Acerra was a Longobard county owned by the Medania and Aquino families . A castle from the year 826 was later destroyed and the city sacked by the Saracens in 881 . The castle was rebuilt under the Normans .

From October 1 to 3, 1943, during World War II, the Acerra massacre took place in which several units of the Parachute-Panzer Division 1 Hermann Göring were involved, killing 84 people, including 7 children and 14 women.

The city name comes from Latin and means "incense box".

Between 1991 and 2001 the population increased from 41,311 to 45,688. This corresponds to a percentage increase of 10.6%.
