history

In 2010 the community made international headlines because of the partly violent demonstrations against the planned construction of a new waste dump. Citizens protested about possible health hazards and environmental damage. The planned new plant would have had a capacity of three million tons and should therefore become the largest waste dump in Europe. On November 18, 2010, the Council of Ministers in Rome abandoned plans for the construction of the new landfill. The reason given was the fierce and sometimes violent protests.

Between 1991 and 2001 the population increased from 13,653 to 15,870. This corresponds to a percentage increase of 16.2%.
