Pilgrimage

Visciano is known outside of the region for the pilgrimage to the Madonna del Carpinello , a portrait of Mary that was found at the foot of a hornbeam ( Italian carpine ) and is considered to be miraculous. For the multitudes of pilgrims , a new basilica ( Santuario di Maria Santissima Consolatrice del Carpinello ) was built, which was completed in 1971.
