history
After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime set up an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in Monteforte Irpino . It was located in the premises of a former orphanage in the middle of the residential area. The internees were Italian opposition activists, anti-fascists who had often served long prison terms. The camp in Monteforte Irpino was only dissolved in late summer 1943.
