Solofra is an Italian commune with 12,388 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Avellino in the Campania region . The place is part of the Comunità Montana Irno - Solofrana .
geography
Solofra is located on the Solofrana , a tributary of the Sarno . The neighboring municipalities are Aiello del Sabato , Calvanico (SA), Contrada , Montoro and Serino . The districts are Sant'Agata Irpina and Sant'Andrea Apostolo.
history
After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime established an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) for women in Solofra . It was located in a centrally located private house on via Misericordia . Some internees were sent for prostitution , others for political unreliability . The hygienic and sanitary conditions were sufficient. In February 1943 there were 26 inmates in the camp who came from Italy, France , Yugoslavia , Poland , Russia , Belgium , Greece , England , Romania , Germany , and also from Czechoslovakia , the Netherlands and Turkey . The camp was finally closed in January 1944.

Solofra is known for its leather industry and is home to a wide variety of tanneries .
