Ariano Irpino is a municipality with 21,995 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Avellino , Campania region . Ariano Irpino is the second largest city in the province.

history
After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime set up an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in Ariano Irpino . The internees were housed in several houses; They were political opponents , members of the Slavic minorities in the Italian border provinces and Yugoslavs from the territories occupied and annexed by Italy. Occasionally foreign Jews, members of hostile nations and even fascist informants came to Ariano Irpino. In July 1943, the Italian inmates were released. The camp was finally closed after September 8, 1943.
