Mercogliano is an Italian commune with 12,118 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Avellino in the Campania region . It is part of the Comunità Montana Partenio - Vallo di Lauro mountain community .

geography

The neighboring municipalities are Avellino , Monteforte Irpino , Mugnano del Cardinale , Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo , Quadrelle and Summonte . The districts are Montevergine , Torelli and Torrette. A funicular takes you up the mountain and the eponymous district of Montevergine .

The 1980 earthquake

Mercogliano was one of the mountain villages hardest hit by the 1980 Irpinia earthquake . The German Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe chose this place as its central location as part of the international reconstruction program and built a kindergarten and 22 prefabricated houses for the victims of the disaster there together with a Fellbach manufacturer (between December 1980 and April 1981).
