Montevergine

Montevergine is an Italian mountain town with about 20 inhabitants. It is a district of the municipality of Mercogliano in the province of Avellino ( Campania ).

The place is at 1263  m slm , the zip code is 83043 and the area code is (+39) 0827. The demonym for the inhabitants is Monverginesi .

The place is on the slope of Monte Partenio and is surrounded by the municipalities of Summonte and Ospedaletto d'Alpinolo . It can be reached by the Montevergine funicular and a small mountain road. There are also some hiking trails up the mountain. The place itself emerged in the 12th century parallel to the Montevergine Abbey , which was founded at that time and which still houses Benedictine monks today.

Due to its mountain road, the place was the arrival point of a stage of the Giro d'Italia in 2001 , 2004 , 2007 and 2011 .
