doping
Under the command of the prosecutor of Florence, Luigi Bocciolini , around 200 carabinieri surrounded and searched the 12 quarters of the 20 teams of the Giro d'Italia on the night of June 6, 2001 in Sanremo in search of doping substances. The night after the 17th stage, the team vehicles were also checked and, according to the investigating prosecutor Antonio Guttadauro, more than 200 drugs were confiscated.
This was the largest anti-doping campaign since the Festina scandal at the 1998 Tour de France and the investigations led to 51 charges.
The 18th stage on the day after the raid was canceled due to protests by the drivers.
