José Azevedo

José Bento Azevedo Carvalho (born September 19, 1973 in Vila do Conde , Portugal ) is a former Portuguese cyclist .

Athletic career

Azevedo became a professional in 1994 with the Portuguese cycling team Recer-Boavista . Between 2001 and 2003 he drove for the Spanish team ONCE-Eroski and developed into a specialist for the "Grand Tours" . In his first participation in a three-week tour, the Giro d'Italia 2001 , he finished fifth. In his Tour de France debut in 2002 , he finished sixth. He took part in the Tour de France four more times, completing the tour each time. His best placement was fifth in the 2004 Tour de France , which he contested as well as the 2005 event as a helper to the winner Lance Armstrong , who was later disqualified for doping .

Professional

After his active career, which ended in 2008, Azevedo worked as a sporting director : in 2010 with Team RadioShack and in 2014 with Team Katusha .
