The 89th Tour de France took place from July 6th to 28th, 2002 and covered 3277 km in 20 stages. 189 racing drivers took part, of which 153 were classified. Lance Armstrong's fourth victory in a row at the Tour de France was possibly his easiest. After Jan Ullrich did not compete due to various crises, the American basically had no serious competition and dominated the tour with four stage wins almost at will.

On October 22, 2012, the UCI World Cycling Federation announced the cancellation of all Armstrong titles since August 1, 1998, including all of the American's Tour de France successes. Successors to first place were not used.

Race course

In Luxembourg , Armstrong won the prologue for the second time since 1999 . A few days later he was surprisingly beaten in the Tour's first individual time trial by the Colombian Santiago Botero , his first defeat in a long Tour time trial since his comeback in 1999. A few days later, however, the American reported with impressive victories (and strong support from his teammate Roberto Heras , who ended up ninth) on the two Pyrenees mountain stages to La Mongie and the Plateau de Beille and did not give up the yellow jersey until the finish.

In both successes, Armstrong overtook French Laurent Jalabert on the last climb , who did not celebrate a stage win on his "farewell tour" with his solo escapes, but won the dotted jersey for the second time in a row . With Richard Virenque , another French national hero was in the refined list of winners at the mythical Mont Ventoux classified.

Erik Zabel won a stage and wore the yellow jersey for one day, but after six years in the green jersey had to give up the title of best sprinter to the Australian Robbie McEwen .
