The 86th Tour de France began on July 3, 1999 in Puy du Fou and ended on July 25, 1999 in Paris . It consisted of 21 stages with a total length of 3,870 km and led through France, Italy and Spain. 141 of 180 riders who started reached the finish.

The overall ranking was won by Lance Armstrong ( US Postal Service ) ahead of Alex Zülle ( Banesto ) and Fernando Escartín ( Kelme-Costa Blanca ), the points ranking was won by Erik Zabel ( Deutsche Telekom ), the mountain ranking won by Richard Virusque ( Polti ) and Jacky was the most combative driver Durand ( Lotto Mobistar ) awarded.

Lance Armstrong was stripped of his successes on August 24, 2012 by the USADA and on October 22, 2012 by the UCI for doping .

Summary

Before the race

The last two winners and last year's best Marco Pantani ( Mercatone Uno-Bianchi ) and Jan Ullrich ( Deutsche Telekom ) did not start. Marco Pantani was absent after being disqualified from the Giro d'Italia , while Jan Ullrich was absent after falling on the Germany Tour .

The shirt number 1 was therefore worn by Bobby Julich, who was third in the previous year ( Cofidis - Le Crédit par Téléphone ). Other prominent participants were last year's winner of the points classification Erik Zabel (Deutsche Telekom), last year's winner of the mountain classification Christophe Rinero (Cofidis - Le Crédit par Téléphone) and last year's most combative driver Jacky Durand ( Lotto-Mobistar ).

The race

Lance Armstrong ( US Postal Service ) won the prologue on July 3rd in Puy du Fou . The 27-year-old American made his comeback there after missing the last two editions of the Tour de France due to testicular cancer .

The first week of racing was then characterized by flat stages. A mass fall occurred on the Passage du Gois ; co-favorite Alex Zülle ( Banesto ) lost over six minutes. The sprinter Mario Cipollini ( Saeco-Cannondale ) meanwhile set two new records with an average speed of more than 50 km / h on the fourth stage and ultimately four stage wins in a row.

The individual time trial on July 11th in Metz won again Lance Armstrong; the co-favorite Fernando Escartín ( Kelme-Costa Blanca ) lost over six minutes.

The second week of the race began with the Alpine stages on July 13th to Sestrières and on July 14th to L'Alpe d'Huez . The 9th stage won Lance Armstrong; Alex Zülle lost 0:31 min and Fernando Escartín lost 1:26 min. Giuseppe Guerini ( Deutsche Telekom ) won the 10th stage - despite a collision with a spectator - while Lance Armstrong, Alex Zülle and Fernando Escartín crossed the finish line at the same time.

The third week of the race began with the Pyrenees stages on July 20th to Piau-Engaly and on July 21st to Pau . Fernando Escartín won the 15th stage; Alex Zülle lost 2:01 minutes and Lance Armstrong lost 2:10 minutes. The 16th stage was won by David Etxebarria ( ONCE-Deutsche Bank ), while Lance Armstrong, Alex Zülle and Fernando Escartín crossed the finish line at the same time.

The individual time trial on July 24th at Futuroscope was again won by Lance Armstrong; Fernando Escartín lost again over four minutes.

The final stage on July 25th to Paris was won by Robbie McEwen ( Rabobank ). On the Champs-Élysées , Lance Armstrong, Alex Zülle and Fernando Escartín were also the winners, second and third in the overall standings, Erik Zabel (Deutsche Telekom) as the winner of the points classification, Richard Virusque ( Polti ) as the winner of the mountain classification and Jacky Durand ( Lotto Mobistar ) honored as the most combative driver.

After the race

The career of Lance Armstrong ( US Postal Service ) has always been accompanied by doping rumors . During the race, L'Équipe reported that traces of a prohibited substance had been found in one of his doping samples, but for which he had been able to produce a prescription.

Later investigations revealed that Lance Armstrong had used the banned substances corticosteroids , EPO , HGH and testosterone, as well as the banned method of blood doping, during his career . He was therefore subsequently disqualified on August 24, 2012 by the USADA and on October 22, 2012 by the UCI .
