The 60th Tour de France took place from June 30th to July 22nd 1973 and ran over 4140 km in 20 stages. The four-time winner Eddy Merckx had not started, the favorite was Luis Ocaña Pernía , who had to retire after falling in the two years before. 132 racing drivers took part in the tour, of which 87 were classified.
Race course
The prologue was won by Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk with less than a second ahead of Raymond Poulidor . The Frenchman, who was never allowed to wear the yellow jersey during his entire career , came closer to the jersey this time than ever before.
With a victory on the seventh stage to Gaillard , Luis Ocaña Pernia took over the yellow jersey after a solo escape. The next day, Ocaña and the Spaniard José Manuel Fuente pulled away on the stage to Les Orres . Already at the Col du Galibier , the two had left all other favorites behind, at the finish Ocaña had pulled away from Fuente and gained a lead of seven minutes on Bernard Thévenet and over 20 minutes on Zoetemelk, Herman Van Springel , Lucien Van Impe and Poulidor. Ocaña's lead in the overall standings was now safe, in Paris, after further stage wins in the Pyrenees, the Alps and in the last individual time trial, he had a 15-minute lead over second-placed Thévenet, who achieved two stage wins.
On the 13th stage to Luchon , Poulidor fell, on a similar stage on which Ocaña fell and retired in 1971 . After his fall, Poulidor was admitted to the same hospital as the Spaniard two years earlier, and allegedly he even had the same bed.
In the end, Ocaña was able to achieve a clear tour victory after six stage wins. In the Tour de France, he rode a bike with a frame made of titanium for the first time , a material that had previously only been used in space and aircraft technology. The mountain stage won Pedro Torres , in the scoring sat Herman Van Springel , the beginning of the tour for a short time had the yellow jersey by.
